What is a PET-CT scan?

  • An integrated PET-CT scan combines the images from a Positron Emission Tomography scan (PET) and an x-ray Computed Tomography scan(CT) performed at the same time on the same machine. Together the two scans create a more complete image.

  • An integrated PET-CT scan is a painless diagnostic exam used to detect and determine the state of cancer, determine whether cancerous cells have spread, and evaluate the effectiveness of cancer treatments.

  • How does a PET-CT scan work?

  • In a PET-CT scan, radioactive sugar molecules are injected into the body. The injection is made thru an IV line inserted into your arm vein. There are no side effects with this medication. The radioactive material will take approximately 1 hour to reach the tissue to be scanned. During this “uptake” phase you will need to remain quiet without talking or moving too much. You may also be given a drink (oral contrast) depending on you diagnosis.

  • The PET-CT scan procedure.

  • When it is time for the scan to begin you will be asked to empty your bladder and remove any clothing with snaps or zippers. If necessary, you will be given an exam gown to wear during the scan.

  • The technologist will help position you on a padded exam table. For your comfort, the table has pillows and straps to help hold you in place as well as a special cradle for your head. During the scan the technologist monitors your procedure from an adjoining room and will be able to observe you through a window. You will be able to communicate with the technologist through an intercom system.

  • The PET-CT scanner resembles a large donut. The exam table will move you slowly into the scanner, covering head to mid thigh for most scans. You will need to remain still for the entire scan, usually 30 min. The technologist will be able to give you the exact exam time when your scan is scheduled.

  • After the PET-CT scan procedure.

  • You can expect to resume your normal activities immediately after your scan, including driving, unless you took medication for pain or anxiety. In this case you will need to have someone drive for you.

  • Through the natural process of radioactive decay, the small amount of radioactive tracer in your body will lose its radioactivity over time. It will also pass out of your body through your urine and stool during the first few hours. You may be instructed by the technologist to drink water to help “flush” the radioactive material from your body.

  • A Radiologist with special training in Nuclear Medicine will interpret the images and forward a report to your referring physician within 24 hours.
